Join us from 11:00am to 1:00pm on the Third Saturday of each Month (Fourth Saturday in October) for our NEW series of FREE "Time Talks" with Mark Brake, Mike Church and Anastazia Thomas. Supported by the Shared Prosperity Fund, as part of our year long "Cosmos, Collieries & Cynefin" project, our series of six "Time Talks" offers an informal insight into the history and evolution of Wales and the Cynon Valley with former Professor of Science & Communication Mark Brake, WAM host Mike Church and St Elvan's Heritage & Community Officer Anastazia Thomas. Each talk is themed and are focused, as follows:
Event I
The Old Cosmos
Saturday September 21st
11:00 to 13:00
The pre-industrial plan of the universe had changed little since ancient times. The many-tiered representations of Dante and Botticelli. We use astronomy and art to chart what our ancestors believed about Creation

[*please note the change of date, due to the Haggarfest silent film festival being held on October 19th*]
11:00 to 13:00

Voices From Underground: Sermons In The Stones
Saturday November 16th
11:00 to 13:00
By the C17th, coal was being hewn from shallow deposits for local use, and by the beginning of the 18th century a trade in coal was developing along the coast from such areas as Pembrokeshire, Llanelli and Swansea Bay. Coal miners as the aristocracy of labour. Coal as black gold. Coal and photosynthesis. Coal miners as diggers for sunlight. The fossil record helped budding paleontologists and geologists place events and species in the appropriate order and geologic era: in undisturbed rock sequences the bottom layers are older than the top layers. The sermon associated with Charles Darwin was hugely influenced by local heroes Alfred Russell Wallace and Elaine Morgan

The Bone Wars
Saturday December 21st
11:00 to 13:00
We found fossils that proved dinosaurs once roamed pre-historic South Wales. Triassic dinosaurs: Pantydraco was unearthed in a quarry at Bonvilston, and
Pendraig (“chief dragon”) was discovered at the Pant-y-Ffynnon quarry near Cowbridge. Jurassic dinosaurs: Paceyodon was found in Pant Quarry, Vale of
Glamorgan, and Dracoraptor (“dragon thief”), discovered in 2014 on the South Wales coast and dated at 201.3 ± 0.2 million years old, is the earliest known
dinosaur from the Jurassic Period and the first Jurassic dinosaur fossil ever found in Wales
