Voices From Underground
Coalfield Communities - Then & Now
"Coalfield Communities - Then & Now" is an open photography project, and part of the wider 2024 | 25 Miners Strikes anniversary project "Voices From Underground"
It's a project which everyone can participate in
Our aim is to create a collection of images from across South Wales and wider, of locations where coalmines were based, and set those photographs against new images of those same locations today
It's a literal illustration of our communities, both then and now

Avon Colliery, now Pen Afan Primary School, Aber | Blaengwynfi, Neath Porth Talbot
The images above show the site of the former Avon Colliery in the village of Aber | Blaengwynfi, and that same site today - now Pen Afan Primary School and the adjacent playing fields
What does your former colliery site look like today?
How has the landscape of your community changed?
We're looking for contributions from volunteer photographers from across South Wales & wider
Firstly, contact your local heritage service or search online to source images of the collieries in your community
Then, try and take the same or similar photograph of that site and how it looks today
When you have both images, contact St Elvan's Heritage & Community Officer Anastazia Thomas by email at [email protected] and we'll place your images here on the site, together with a credit to you and to the source of the original period image
Please note, all submissions should be the personal copyright and property of the individual submitting images, or have permission granted by the copyright owner for inclusion in the project
Your local county heritage service or heritage officer should be able to help you source period images
If you'd like to also submit images of individuals taken during the miners' strikes, together with images of those same people today, those are also very much welcomed
All images submitted to the project will be published below, as and when they are received
Images are welcomed right through the year ahead. Be creative, and be sure that your community and colliery is represented
For additional information, contact us by email or our Facebook account here
